EBU Uplinks
As a contractor to Scientific Atlanta I carried out on-site installation and commissioning of a number of 9m Ku Band uplinks which were deployed in Eastern European countries when the OIRT merged with the EBU
The first of these was in Prague - naturally in the winter !
The primary use of these was to allow national broadcasters to participate in the daily EBU News Exchange. This required the ability for the operators to quickly activate and deactivate their uplinks on a set of designated leased transponders on the first generation of Eutelsat satellites.
In order to achieve this the project had a complex Monitor and Control system which provided the ability to go up/down on any of the EBU Channels from a remote PC. The M&C system also provided Uplink Power Control.
During this process I became an SME on the S-A Monitor and Control System, working closely with the dev team in Atlanta to iterate through different builds of their software (downloaded via 14.4kbps modem on international calls !)
